An educational assistant that works with hearing impaired elementary school children in Milton, has been arrested and faces a couple of charges, including sexual assault.
E.C Drury School for the Deaf in Milton is both a high school and an elementary school.
The majority of students who attend the school are bussed in, but many stay in residence on campus.
On Friday, Cassandra Bell, an employee of the elementary school was arrested by Halton Police.
“So as the result of an investigation the Halton Regional Police have arrested a 31 year old Milton female named Cassandra Bell. She has been charged with sexual assault and sexual interference.”
Today, students were sent home with a letter informing parents of the charges.
The principal wrote: “It has come to our attention that an individual employed as an educational assistant, at E.C Drury School for the Deaf in Milton was recently arrested and charged with sexual assault and sexual interference.”
The Ministry of Education, which oversees the school, released this statement to CHCH news today: “The employee is currently suspended pending the investigation. We understand this may be upsetting for students and have advised parents and guardians of the supports available to assist students during this time.”
Halton Police say, “Obviously anytime a young person is involved it’s very disturbing, especially when it involves a person who’s in a position of authority for sure that’s a cause for concern.”
They say the alleged offences took place at the school between July 2018, and January of this year. They won’t say how old the victim was, but said they are currently a student at the school.
Anyone with information that could help police with the investigation is asked to contact Det. Sgt. Chris Newcombe at 905-465-8965 or Det. Keith Nakahara at 905-465-8980.
